1. Wet Sand Can Cause Blockages and Uneven Spreading
Rainwater can make sand damp, sticky, and prone to clumping. Wet sand may block the hopper, auger conveyor, and spreading disc, resulting in uneven material distribution or even complete system blockage. In severe cases, the excessive load caused by jammed material may damage the drive system or hydraulic components.
Even if the machine can still discharge the material, wet sand tends to fall in lumps instead of spreading evenly, which greatly reduces spreading performance and application quality.
2. Risk of Equipment Corrosion and Electrical Failure
Continuous exposure to rainwater may accelerate corrosion on key components, including the hopper, chains, auger shaft, and spreading disc.
Water entering the control box, wiring harness connectors, or electrical components may cause short circuits, sensor failures, or other electrical malfunctions.
3. Reduced Driving Safety
Wet roads reduce tire grip and increase braking distance. The vehicle may experience sliding during braking or turning, especially on slippery surfaces.
When operating in areas with standing water or flooded sections, the chassis and spreading mechanism may be exposed to water immersion, increasing the risk of mechanical and electrical damage.
Required Measures for Operation During Light Rain
If operation is necessary in light rain or drizzle, the following precautions should be taken:
Cover the hopper with a waterproof tarp or rain cover and use only dry sand. Do not load wet or rain-soaked sand.
Reduce driving speed, maintain a greater following distance, and avoid deep puddles or flooded areas.
Check hydraulic lines, electrical connectors, and sealing points before operation to ensure they are properly protected.
After operation:
Empty the hopper completely.
Wash and clean the spreading system to remove remaining sand and moisture.
Dry the control box and electrical components.
Lubricate chains, bearings, and moving parts to prevent rust, corrosion, and sticking.
Application Scenario Considerations
1. Winter De-icing and Anti-slip Sand Spreading
For winter road maintenance, light rain or drizzle may still allow limited operation, especially when the purpose is improving temporary traction.
However, heavy rain is not recommended, because rainfall can quickly wash away the applied sand, reducing its anti-slip effectiveness.
2. Construction Sand Spreading (Road Base, Site Preparation, Landscaping Projects)
For engineering applications such as road base preparation, construction sites, and ground surfacing, operation is generally suspended during rainy weather.
Wet sand has poor flowability and may not achieve the required compaction performance and construction quality standards.
